WHAT IS MHL?

Mobile High-Definition Link or MHL is commonly referred to as a standard for audio / video interface that allows users for connect mobile phones and portable electronic devices consumer electronic (CE) and the display to an HDTV. MHL standard supports resolutions up to 1080p / 60 HD video, 7.1 surround sound audio and charging the connected device.

Examples of some of the products such as MHL AV Receiver, Adapter, Blue-ray Disc Player, DTVs, Monitors, Projectors, Tablet, Smartphone, Accessories TV and others. MHL is being developed by the MHL Consortium, which consists of several well-known companies such as Samsung, Nokia, Silicon Image, Sony and Toshiba. And in early 2013, announced that since its introduction MHL enabled device on the first MHL two years ago, the MHL ecosystem continues to grow with more than 220 million products.

By using MHL transmitters from Silicon Image, mobile devices can do more than just streaming video and audio to the TV. Users can browse multimedia content on mobile devices using the remote HDTV, including browsing through pictures, run apps, listen to music or also streaming online video content from sites like YouTube through 3G or 4G networks. Silicon Image is also developing chips MHL-to-HDMI for connecting the MHL-enabled devices to the television using the connection on the device.

The first time, Samsung announced that the Samsung Galaxy S II using MHL connection on MWC 2011 event. Then HTC also announced that the HTC Evo 3D and HTC Sensation XE supports MHL output.

For the implementation of MHL on mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets, there are several types of connections that can be used:

 

5-pin MHL-HDMI Adapter / Dongle

5-pin MHL-HDMI Adapter is the first application to use the most popular mobile connections like microUSB and TV connections such as HDMI are most popular. MHL signaling through the connectors and will be distributed exclusively through cable.

11-pin MHL-HDMI / Dongle

11-pin MHL-HDMI Adapter has been used by the Samsung Galaxy S II and Samsung Galaxy Note II. Basically, use the MHL with 5-pin connector. The difference lies in the use of 11-pin for achieve functional improvement compared to 5-pin MHL. This supports the use of USB and MHL together. Like the latest products from Samsung that uses the 11-pin MHL-HDMI Adapter also has a USB port On-The-Go.

Because the Samsung Galaxy Note II and Samsung Galaxy S II using a 11-pin MHL-HDMI adapter, the device can use the MHL-HDMI adapter when connected to a TV that does not use the MHL. Actually theoretically can also be done with a standard 5-pin micro-USB connector. But, the Samsung Galaxy S II is believed to be the first smartphone that supports this function.

There are some smartphones that have used the MHL connection such as LG Optimus M Pro, Acer CloudMobile, HTC One X, HTC One S, HTC Butterfly, Huawei Ascend P1, Samsung Galaxy Note, Samsung Galaxy Note II, Samsung Galaxy S II, Samsung Galaxy S III mini, Samsung Galaxy S4 and Sony Xperia Z.
